Lonely in aged care? Let’s talk about the myths — and the reality at HillView

One of the most common concerns families have when considering aged care for a loved one is the fear they will be lonely or isolated. Of course, this is a natural worry and a valid one. After all, you want them to feel cared for and connected.

At HillView Care, we want every resident to feel safe and comfortable. Our Gold Coast residential aged care homes are places where people can feel supported, valued and surrounded by a welcoming community. Let’s look at some of the biggest myths around age care and loneliness, and how we’re helping to change the story.

The myths

Myth 1: Aged care means giving up your independence and social life.

Reality: At HillView, many residents become more socially active than people half their age!

It’s not uncommon for residents to tell us that life feels busier, in a good way, after moving into HillView Care. That’s because there are so many ways to stay connected: chatting with friends over a morning coffee, taking part in art or music groups, or sharing stories during a stroll in the garden.

We don’t take independence away. We provide the time, space and support to enjoy life, with as much or as little social connection as each resident prefers.

Myth 2: Everyone’s expected to join the same group activities.

Reality: We offer a wide variety of experiences, to meet the needs of all our residents.

No two people are the same, and we don’t expect their routines or hobbies to be either. Whether someone enjoys group games, gardening, music therapy or quiet reading, we take the time to understand what they like.

Our lifestyle programs at HillView Care Merrimac and Ashmore are diverse, inclusive and thoughtfully designed to help residents stay active and engaged in ways that are meaningful to them.

Myth 3: Staff are too busy to form real relationships.

Reality: Our staff build genuine, caring bonds with residents.

At HillView Care, our staff aren’t just here to provide aged care, they’re here to connect. We get to know each resident, not just by name, but by personality, building strong bonds and friendships. From knowing how someone likes their tea to remembering important milestones, we believe in showing kindness through the little things.

Myth 4: Visits from family are difficult or discouraged.

Reality: We encourage regular family connection and make it easy.

We believe staying close to family is so important and that’s why we welcome visits with open arms. Catch up for lunch in the café, take a stroll through the garden, or just spend some quiet time together in their room, whatever you do, families are a key part of our community here at HillView Care.

Myth 5: Aged care feels clinical and impersonal.

Reality: HillView feels more like home than a facility.

Gone are the days of institutional-style aged care. At HillView Care, we’ve worked hard to create a warm, welcoming environment that feels more like home – with communal lounges, landscaped gardens, and beautiful views of the hinterland or coast.

Every corner of our residences is designed thoughtfully to feel warm, inviting and lived in.

Transitioning into residential aged care

We understand that transitioning into aged care can be a big change, and that worries about loneliness are real. But at HillView Care, we work every day to create a place where residents can thrive: socially, emotionally and physically.

It starts with a culture of care. One that celebrates individuality, encourages community and makes every person feel at home.
