Keeping independence – how our Gold Coast aged care teams encourage self-help

Too often people associate moving into residential aged care with the loss of independence. It’s a common fear of both residents and their families. Thankfully, modern aged care is very different. Homes like HillView Care on the Gold Coast, focus on encouraging independence while offering premium care and support for every individual.

In 2022, around 244,000 Australians were living in permanent residential aged care, with almost 40% needing only low-level support” (AIHW, 2022).

Why does independence matter so much as we age?

When an individual needs lower level support, maintaining independence can mean keeping dignity, confidence and a sense of purpose. Just like staying active and independent can help physical health, it also has mental and emotional benefits for residents.

As a family member, it feels great to know that your loved one still has choice in their daily life, from the meals they like to eat, to the activities they take part in, and even how they spend the quieter moments. It’s these small freedoms that make life feel meaningful and bring joy.

Let’s talk about the role of our Gold Coast aged care teams

As well as caring for your loved one, HillView Care’s team always encourages residents to do what they can, when they can. While we’re here to support every step of the way, we focus on providing gentle guidance rather than stepping in to do everything. It’s about doing things with individuals, instead of always doing things for them.

That might look like assisting a resident with a meal instead of feeding them, offering a steady hand while they get dressed, or encouraging them to take part in a favourite hobby or activity.

Our aged care teams also work closely with our on-site physiotherapists, nurses and lifestyle team to create regular opportunities for movement, connection and purpose. It’s really just about finding the right balance, helping where it’s needed, while celebrating every achievement, no matter how small.

Everyday ways residents can stay independent

There are so many ways we can help residents stay independent. Choice in daily routines, including meals, activities and how they socialise, access to our beautiful gardens as well as community and social events, and of course, encouraging mobility through walking, light exercise and our HillView Care Wellness Program.

We also encourage our residents to maintain self-care, booking in appointments with our on-site hair and beauty services for haircuts and other services.

How we help families through this journey

The transition from your loved one living at home, to now living in an aged care facility can be challenging for families. At HillView Care, we know this, so we make it our priority to keep families involved and informed at every step. This gives you the peace of mind that your loved one is getting the best possible care and their independence is always our focus.
