How to pack for respite at HillView Care

At HillView Care, respite residents receive the same wonderful services as our permanent residents, including private ensuites, personalised care, chef-prepared meals, and a variety of activities that promote independence and create a welcoming atmosphere.

If your loved one is due for a respite stay at one of our Gold Coast aged care homes in Merrimac or Ashmore, you might be wondering what they need to pack. Whether they are staying for a couple of days or a few weeks, preparing thoughtfully can ensure they have a comfortable and enjoyable experience.

Here are a few tips to help you pack effectively for respite care at HillView Care:

Clothing

It’s important to pack warm jackets, a hat, comfortable shoes and any other clothing items that will ensure their comfort, especially if the weather is cool or hot during their stay. Don’t forget pyjamas or nightgowns, and robes and slippers can be great options too.

Personal care items

Whilst basic toiletries are included in their stay, your loved one may like to bring their usual toiletries for their stay in respite. These might include their dental products, hairbrush, make-up, shampoo and conditioner, soap or body wash and other personal hygiene products. You can also pack any moisturisers, sunscreen and skin care products.

Medical needs

For their stay in respite, your loved ones will need any medical equipment they use in their daily lives, including walkers, canes or assistive devices. Pack all medications in their original containers, along with a list of dosages and instructions. Include important medical documents, such as health insurance information, medicare card, a list of allergies, and emergency contact details.

Electronics

Don’t forget their mobile phone or tablet and chargers so you can keep in touch. If your loved one uses hearing aids, pack extra batteries and cleaning supplies.

Comfort items

Your loved one is encouraged to bring items that will make their stay more comfortable, such as a favourite pillow, blanket or family photo. They are also welcome to bring books, puzzles, knitting supplies or other hobbies that they enjoy.

Snacks

While we have a team of talented chefs preparing home-cooked meals and providing snacks for our residents, your loved one may want to bring along some of their favourite snacks or drinks for in-between meals.
