Understanding aged care respite: A lifeline for families

Caring for a loved one is one of the most fulfilling yet challenging roles a person can take on. It can be demanding, emotionally and physically. To continue providing the best care possible, carers need time to rest and recharge – and that’s where aged care respite steps in.

Respite care offers a temporary solution that supports you and your loved one, creating a win-win scenario. Here’s everything you need to know about aged care respite and how it can benefit your family.

What is aged care respite?

Aged care respite provides short-term stays in our residential aged care community. Whether it’s a planned break or an emergency situation, respite care allows you to take time for yourself while ensuring your loved one is well cared for in a supportive environment.

Respite can also be helpful after a hospital stay when higher levels of care might be needed. By offering a safe and welcoming space, our Gold Coast respite care ensures that both you and your loved one have what you need to thrive.

Why respite care matters

Taking a break is not just helpful, it’s essential. As a carer, you focus so much on others that you may neglect your own health and well-being. Respite care is a lifeline that provides balance and prevents burnout, ensuring you can continue your vital role.

Benefits for carers:

  • Time to recharge: Caring for someone can be physically and emotionally exhausting. Respite gives you the chance to rest, recharge, and return to your role feeling refreshed.
  • Self-care: Whether it’s visiting friends, enjoying a hobby, or addressing personal health needs, respite allows you to focus on yourself for a change.
  • Prevention of burnout: Regular breaks help prevent carer fatigue, which can impact both your physical and mental health.

Benefits for respite residents

While you take a break, your loved one benefits too. Respite care isn’t just about providing temporary accommodation – it’s an opportunity for connection, stimulation, and professional support.

  • A fresh environment: A change of scenery and routine can boost physical and mental well-being.
  • Social opportunities: Respite stays often include activities, events, and opportunities to meet new people.
  • Quality care: Respite residents are cared for by qualified professionals, giving families peace of mind.

Respite can also be a chance for loved ones to experience life in an aged care community, helping them transition more smoothly if permanent care is ever needed.

How to access respite care in Australia

Accessing respite care starts with an Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT) evaluation. This free assessment determines eligibility for government-funded aged care services, including respite care.

Once approved, eligible clients can access up to 63 days of respite care per financial year, with extensions available in certain cases. Many families plan respite stays in advance, but emergency respite is also an option when unexpected situations arise.

To arrange respite care:

  1. Contact My Aged Care to book an ACAT assessment.
  2. Once approved, reach out to your chosen aged care provider to check availability and make arrangements.
