FAQs – transitioning into residential aged care

If your loved one can no longer live independently, it may be time to consider helping them into an aged care home. Unfortunately, the process can be quite overwhelming for both you and your loved one, it’s a sensitive and sometimes even stressful time.

Here at HillView Care we’re here for you. Our team will give you the support and advice you need from the moment you apply for the aged care assessment, until your loved one moves into our Merrimac or Ashmore aged care home.

Here are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about transitioning into an aged care home.

What kind of services do residential aged care homes provide?

Residential aged care homes provide a range of services including accomodation, all meals, cleaning and laundry. Aged care staff help with personal care including bathing, dressing and going to the bathroom.

Residents also have access to health services including clinical care and therapies and other health practitioners.

Other services at HillView Care residential aged care homes include entertainment, events and activities to build social connections and provide emotional support.

At HillView Care we provide all these services, as well as:

  • Home-cooked meals prepared by on-site chefs.
  • Hair and beauty services on-site.
  • 24/7 medical team.
  • Cafe on-site at Merrimac.
  • Daily housekeeping.

At HillView Care we want all of our residents to feel at home and you decide how you are cared for. We are here to support your physical and emotional needs, but encourage all our residents to remain as independent as possible.

What is the first step when transitioning into an aged care home?

Before you start looking at aged care homes, the first step is to find out if your loved one is eligible for subsidised aged care. This is a two-part process and will help determine what level of care your loved one needs. The first part of the assessment can be done online, or over the phone, then you will need to attend an in-person assessment with the Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT).

How much does aged care cost?

Every residential aged care home on the Gold Coast charges different fees and the fees will depend on the type of room you choose. At HillView Care we’ll sit down with you and discuss our fee structure and what our basic daily fee covers.

Can I view the facilities before we make a decision?

Of course, we’d love for you and your loved one to visit HillView Care at Merrimac or Ashmore to take a tour of our facilities. Our friendly staff will show you through our beautifully appointed rooms and let you discover all the other wonderful spaces we offer our residents.

Are friends and family welcome to visit residents regularly?

We understand how important it is for residents to stay connected to family and friends. That’s why we created multiple spaces around our aged care homes where residents can entertain. Our on-site chefs are even available to provide catering!

My loved one has dementia, what kind of care do you offer?

Dementia patients need individualised care in a respectful and understanding environment. At HillView Care our team develops strong bonds with our residents and always takes a personalised approach. For us, it’s vital to understand the needs of each individual resident to care for them in the best way possible.

We provide a high level of security to ensure each resident’s safety, as well as a quality, round-the-clock medical team to manage their health needs.
